To learn about the different types of poetry, you are going to work in groups to research and teach each other about the types of poems. Each group will get a category that they must research. The group must work together to create a presentation for the rest of the class.
Guiding questions for research and presentation:
- What characteristics does your type of poetry possess? (Does it have a set rhyme scheme, a certain number of lines, syllables, words, etc.)
- Is this type of poetry usually associated with a certain topic? If so, what topic? (Example: haiku are usually about nature, etc.)
- What resources can you find to make your presentation hands-on and interactive?
- What examples can you provide to help your classmates see what this poetry type looks like in real life?
- What questions do you want your classmates to be able to answer after you have presented your topic?
- What characteristics does your type of poetry possess? (Does it have a set rhyme scheme, a certain number of lines, syllables, words, etc.)
So, here is the procedure:
- Give each person in your group a role.
- Research your topic (see below for links to reliable websites that you should use).
- Work with your group to create a presentation that teaches the class about your type of poem (remember that everyone should help and provide support based on their role in the group). Use the “guiding questions” above to help you figure out what your presentation should cover.
- Come up with two quiz questions about your topic that will be used to test your classmates about your topic. Your scribe should email me these two questions.
- On Tuesday, 9/8, each group will present their topic.
- On Thursday, 9/10, we will take a quiz over all of the poetry types.
