Thesis Statements
Here is the important information we need to remember about our thesis statements:
1) They summarize your position on the topic of your essay.
2) They act as a road map for you and your reader.
3) They are 1-2 sentences long.
4) They should always be at the end of your introduction.
5) They follow the formula: Claim + Reason = Thesis
6) The strongest kind of thesis is the 3 point thesis, where you give three specific reasons to support your claim.
In 8th grade, you will use the format:
"My favorite place is ____________ because _______________."
or
"A place I enjoy is _____________ because _______________."
Do NOT write your thesis as a "meta" thesis!
Avoid:
-"Today I will tell you about..."
-"In this paper I will talk about..."
-"Hi, my name is _________ and I am going to talk about..."
